Each morning our cat Fluffy persistently pesters me until I get up to feed her. She walks across my body from my feet and perches on my chest. If I don’t wake up right away she gently paws at my chin, followed by rubbing her face against my chin. Annoyed, I finally tell her in Hindi, khane ka samay (time to eat), and she leaps from my chest and runs to her bowl.
Fluffy seems to know the time independent of the sun. In the summer, sunrise may come as early as 4:44 am; in the winter it isn’t until after 7 am, but Fluffy consistently wakes me – and only me – at 6 am sharp. Most of the time, I’m reluctant to get up, preferring to stay in bed as long as possible.
